The Emotional Shift Project

tuning into and connecting with Difficult Emotions

MOVING TOWARD CURIOSITY AND WONDER

2025 has been a tense year. So many of us, myself included, are feeling an incredible range of emotions about what's already happened and what might be ahead. The best way forward, for both our physical and mental well-being, is to tap into our internal strength and resilience.

This project blends my art with my personal journey of understanding how the feelings in my body connect to my emotions. My aim is to provide a visual reminder of the beauty and wonder that exists in our world as well as give you a resource for transforming the strain you're feeling so you can navigate the daily turbulence a bit better.

It's not about shifting out of negativity into positivity, but out of negativity into neutrality. It’s not about making the storms go away, but accepting that storms are going to come and having the tools to be ready for them.

PROJECT DETAILS

Initially the project took place solely on YouTube. The videos opened with a somatic exercise, then transitioned into a relaxing mandala animation. I quickly realized that sitting on our couch, staring at a screen was likely not as much of a downshift as our bodies and minds needed.

Not wanting to abandon the project, I went to work on planning how I could move the project offline. I came up with an arch that visuals can be projected onto.

A scale model of the arch for testing

Why is the structure shaped like that?

The design I chose is in the shape of a lotus, which is a symbol for overcoming adversity.

Why an arch?
An arch makes the work more interactive and act as a symbolic gateway. Visitors can stand in the arch and have their photo taken without interrupting the projection, or walk through the arch as a symbol that they are leaving their difficult emotions behind while in attendance.

How does the arch connect with somatic exercises?
At each arch pop-up location will be a brochure of somatic exercises that you can take with you. If you feel comfortable doing one before taking in the relaxing visuals, you're more than welcome to. Otherwise you can try them on your own at home.

WHERE TO FIND THE ARCH

As soon as the arch is built, I will be planning pop-ups in locations around the Twin Cities.

HOW TO SUPPORT THE PROJECT

I've set up an ongoing GoFundMe to assist with the cost of construction as well as the time and effort involved.
Donations are greatly appreciated!
